What do you DO?
I don't really like that phrase.
When you meet someone new, the convo usually looks like this:
New person: "How are you?"
You: "Good!" (no matter how you really ARE doing)
New person after a slightly awkward silence: "So... what do you do?"
I don't really think it's the best question to ask when you are getting to know someone, because I don't think it's our profession that really defines us, but our passion.
What are you passionate about?

I agree that it can be an awkward and unfortunate first question. That being said, since at least a percentage of the population is following their dreams through their career, it's a valid and useful information some of the time.
ReplyDeleteMany other people are in a period of transition or searching, and what they do says very little about their personality or who God made them to be.
And yet... it says more about a person than the potential they have yet to realize. One could argue that the sum of our choices says more about who we really are than what God has made us to be that we're not walking in.
Food for thought.
That's really interesting! I think the question is a little more annoying for my age group right now as we are all pretty fresh out of college and sometimes take jobs just to make ends meet!
